More on Larry Echo Hawk

This is a second entry on Opposition to Larry Echo Hawk being appointed to Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs.

What could happen if Larry Echo Hawk becomes appointed? He has shown a particular interest in opposing Indian Gambling. So does this spell a conflict of Interest for making decisions about Indian Gambling as the BIA Secretary?

Doesn't this sound familiar? Anybody else smell barbecue wafting through the halls of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, or is it just me?

"Famous" Dave Anderson, excused himself from making any decision about gambling for ethical reasons. Will Larry Echo Hawk excuse himself as well? Or will he plod on, and with the stroke of an un-watched pen, will he strike down any more tribes' right to conduct gambling on their reservations. Will he oppose Sovereign Tribal Councils' decisions regarding gambling? Does he even belong in the appointment process?

Well when Dave Anderson stepped down, afterwards Julie Pelletier said "maybe he was ethically correct in removing himself." Then she said, "...then perhaps he was not the correct person for that position, since he had such a close tie to Indian gaming."

Wow. What will we do if Larry Echo Hawk, a Semi-Slayer of Indian Gambling, gains access to the highest Indian Office in the Land?

More importantly what do we do before it happens?

Anonymous said...: Well, that sounds pretty alarming. But could you enlighten us some more with maybe some reference materials? I could say you are a fear monger, and spread that around the moccosin telepath just as easy as you say EchoHawk is going to cripple indian gamming.

It's been my experience that a lot of things happen out on the reservation agricultural fields; a lot more happens in the tribal fields than we are aware of! These activities on the reservation fields can be classed as one of many Native Issues.
A Native Issue can start with your lease, or your title, and go from there. You have to realize that there are a lot of operations in farming. To keep honest farmers honest, you have to keep on top of the game, which means informing yourself of all the Native Issues, all the procedures, all the people involved in farming on a reservation or beneficial use and protection of the land.
That means using your representatives to really represent you, and keeping the signature authorities (Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Special Trustee, and in some cases, your own Native American Tribe) aware of what your needs are. Your needs are everybody's needs, so if one of us Indians has been shorted, it's almost written in stone that we've all been shorted. When any one of us on an Indian Reservation gets shorted by a Policy or a short stroke of a pen, it becomes a Native Issue, because it could happen to any of us after the first occurance. Maybe it's not intentional, maybe it is. But until we all start looking into all of these Native Issues, together, we'll never know...
"Native Issues" was created to inform, educate, and empower Indian Land Owners about the multitude of truly unique Native Issues we are faced with when we own land on an American Indian Reservation.
